LEUKEMIA SURVIVOR HEADED FOR IVY LEAGUE
A leukemia survivor who endured five years of chemotherapy will be the first Silverado High School graduate (2005)to attend an Ivy League college.
Nick calls the time he suffered from childhood leukemia starting at age 9 "unique."
"I learned that sometimes kids and people can be mean, but you continue what you're doing and find out who your friends are. It taught me perseverance and that you can accomplish anything," Noyer said.
Nick worked the 2004 summer as a page in the House of Representatives performing errands on the House floor. Nick said he met all 435 representatives in the House as well as former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Senator Hillary Clinton.
Nick said while his parents split their votes between Bush and Kerry, he is a Republican who looks forward to joining the Harvard Republican Club.
He has been his class president the last four years and has political aspirations.
"The last four years I learned to plan and work with many kinds of people. It prepared me for a lot of things I'll be doing in the future. It helped me understand the importance of being able to function in the real world," Noyer said.
"So many people like to make their jokes about Silverado, but if you invest and give your best, it will give back to you," he said.
"I have no aspiration to be president, but I say to myself, never count yourelf out for anything," Noyer said.
Nick toured the Ivy League colleges and picked Harvard for its great atmosphere and great education. He said there were 1,650 new students picked from 24,000 applicants.
Noyer played varsity soccer and tennis, was Interact Club president, editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, state president of the California Association of Student Councils, and worked with Freedom's Answer, a nationwide organization that encourages adults to register to vote.
Nick thinks the privileges Americans have are one of a kind and may never be duplicated again.
"We should be proud of ourselves rather than critiquing each other's political differences," Noyer said.
